What is crew?

What is crew?

Crew is about team work, dedication, discipline, and a lot of fun. We practice in the mornings each day (in the afternoons for our Novice group) and have regattas in the fall and spring.  We row locally on the intracoastal waterway and Botanical Gardens, and travel to the beautiful venues of Mathews, VA, James River in Richmond, Occoquan River in Northern Virginia, and the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia.

Crew is the team sport of rowing and one of the greatest physical challenges you will ever meet. Rowers train to the highest aerobic level, learn teamwork unlike any other sport, and are encouraged to weight train to increase power and strength. In the spring we compete on a course that is approximately 1,500 meters long.  Rowers sit in boats called “shells” where they sweep (with one oar) or scull (with two oars).  The shells can hold as many as eight sweep rowers and a coxswain, four sweep rowers and a coxswain, two scullers, or a single sculler. Men and women compete in events that are matched against rowers of comparable ages, size, and skill level. There are varsity, novice, and even lightweight events.

Get in Shape!

Pound for pound, rowers are the strongest athletes on the face of the earth.  Rowing is rated the #1 cross-training exercise for other sports.  You will build strength and tone the arms legs, back, abs, and heart.

Meet new friends at Hickory High School and Middle School and other nearby schools (homeschoolers too!)

Other schools in our area share our love of the water. We meet up often and race against each other. We race against schools such as Great Bridge, Cox, Granby, Maury, and many other local schools.
